Catalan, the language of 10 million people

Catalan is a teaching language in Vives region universities and it is also widely used in all activities of academic life. Basic knowledge of Catalan provides great advantage to Erasmus students to enjoy university experience in equal conditions to local students.

Catalan is a Romance language that was formed between the 8th and 10th centuries. The first texts written in Catalan date from the 12th century. Between the 13th and 16h it became a reference language in the Mediterranean. Today is present in all society areas. Fully adapted to the needs of modern society, Catalan is the 26th language in the world with more presence in Internet.

It is spoken by 10 million people in 4 countries -Andorra (official language), Spain (co-official language), France and Italy. Within these states, it is used in the regions of Catalonia, Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands (Spain), Southern France (France) and the city of Alghero in Sardinia (Italy). In the Valencian Community, Catalan also receives the name «Valencian».
