The University of Alicante is one of the 21 universities in Vives Network. The University of Alicante was created in October 1979 upon the structure of the former University Studies Centre (CEU), which was founded in 1968. Therefore, this was a way for Alicante to get back its university studies centre, which was suspended in 1834 upon closure of the University of Oriola, its precursor, after two centuries of existence. The University of Oriola was created by means of a Papal Bull in 1545 and had kept its doors open for two centuries (1610-1808). The province of Alicante, therefore, has an important university tradition and a rich heritage. This can be seen in the current Santo Domingo building, the oldest in the University of Oriola, which has now been restored thanks to an agreement between the Diocese and the University.

In this latest phase, university studies were resumed in academic year 1968-69 with just 230 students. The number has since increased and today amounts to nearly 33,000 students. The University of Oriola has thus become the Spanish university with the highest proportional growth of students.
The University of Alicante, after almost twenty years of existence, has a very significant potential for socio-economic development in the province, which comes fourth in terms of total GDP in Spain. It hosts about fifty study programmes, over seventy university departments and research groups in the areas of Social Sciences and Law, Experimental Technology, Humanities, Education and Health Sciences and five university research institutes developing the most outstanding research activities in the country.

Our University is the first company in the province of Alicante with over 2,000 employees (administrative and academic staff). It is indeed a referent for many companies with which it has contracts for technical assistance, technology transfer, internships, postgraduate education … It is also a reference institution for international relations with conventions, university venues, mobility and exchange programmes, and cooperation agreements with various innovative projects in many parts of the world.

We have an important Area for Industrial Experimentation and Research Services (Analytical Lab, Pilot Plants, Laboratories, Computer Service, Information, Bibliographical and Documentation Systems, European Data Centre, New Business Creation Centre, Employment Development Centre, Technology Transfer Office, European Innovation Rely Centre CENEMES, Office of the Vice President for Technology and Educational Innovation, Image Workshop, and International Relations Centre). Also, our University is located in one of the best campuses in Europe: one million square feet with the best urban design and the most innovative architecture within a framework of environmental excellence (green areas, landscaping, pedestrian areas, cultural, sports and educational facilities) and a wide variety of services.

This University is located in the most strategic area of the province and the Spanish Mediterranean area: the A-7 (Mediterranean motorway) and the Inland Highway can be accessed from the edge of the Campus. The University of Alicante is five minutes away from the capital of the province, 10 minutes away from the international airport of l’Altet, less than twenty minutes away from the main industrial areas, less than fifteen minutes away from nearby recreational areas (residential zones, beaches, golf courses…) and is surrounded on its western end and near the future Science Park by a railway line.
In addition to its strong commitment towards innovation and technology, the University of Alicante is considered to be one of the 6 most prestigious universities regarding strong commitment to culture and heritage. This is proven by the Archaeological Park of l’Alcúdia (one of the finest European university museums), the former University venue in Oriola (1610-1808), which is the best Valencian Renaissance building, the medieval Palau Contal de Cocentaina, the Benissa Palau houses… all these achievements have led to a growing reputation on a national and international level.
Within this spirit, the University aims at progressively setting up one of the best Science Parks in the world. Its goal is to gradually make all the necessary investments in teaching and research equipment, as well as in infrastructure, to place the University of Alicante at the frontline of European universities.
