Rovira i Virgili University (RVU) was created in 1991 by the Parliament of Catalonia, from existing centres. In this way the Tarragona University of the 16th century was recovered. Its name honours the memory of the distinguished Catalan Antoni Rovira i Virgili, writer, historian and politician and one of the biggest theorist and promoters of the Catalan national cause, who was president of the Parliament of Catalonia and an example of civility, work and esteem for the Catalan people values.

From the first working day, the RVU has had a very clear objective: to place knowledge at the service of society to contribute to the social and economic development of its environment, a context that has been transformed over time. Currently, the regional environment of the RVU is one of the most dynamic social and economic areas of Europe and is destined to become an engine for the development and progress of Catalonia at the beginning of the 21st century.

Social and cultural changes have opened a new framework and have made Europe a place of interaction required for students and future employees. At RVU future professionals are trained under the approach of European harmonization, a key aspect to open doors in a professional world without borders. About 15,000 students are trained at the RVU and the number of graduates is 2,000 people per year.

The areas offered by the University are grouped into twelve own centers and two affiliated, distributed in Tarragona, Reus, Vila-seca, Tortosa and El Vendrell. The data confirm the RVU as a reference college in Catalonia and in the European area for the quality of teaching, its commitment to lifelong learning education and by the excellence in research, development and innovation. The RVU is the developer of the Internacional Excellence Campus South Catalonia, recognized by the Ministry in 2010.

Thus, the RVU has become a modern public higher education institution serving a dynamic region, the southern regions of Catalonia; an institution committed to the harmonious development of society, from the knowledge generation and the training of professionals and citizens in defense of the values ??of humanism, civility and respect for the environment. An institution decisively engaged in the process of convergence towards the European space for higher education and research.
